TalkDoctors was founded by Dr. Paul David Kai`makani`mele Swigart, also known as Dr. Kai. Dr. Kai is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Hawaii and California, Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), and Certified Arise Interventionist (CAI). He has been a licensed therapist since 1988.

Dr. Kai received a Ph.D. in psychology from United States International University (USIU), an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), a B.S. in Psychology from Illinois State University (ISU), and a B.A./B.S. in Music Therapy from Illinois State University (ISU).

Dr. Kai is a member of numerous professional organizations, and serves on the board of directors of two of them. He is the President statewide of the Hawaii Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (HAMFT), a Clinical Member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) , a member of the board of directors of the Association of Arise Interventionists (AAI), a Member of the National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists , a Professional Member of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA), a member of the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders (AAHCPAD), a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), and a member of the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce (HICC).

Dr. Kai has also functioned as a fully credentialed psychologist for the U.S. Air Force, credentialed through the U. S. Department of Defense; and in this capacity has provided psychological services on Johnston Atoll, a remote Pacific Chemical Agent Demilitarization Site (JACADS). In this role, Dr. Kai provided fitness for duty evaluations, critical incident stress debriefings, and the full range of counseling services for military and non-military personnel. When providing marital and family therapy in this context, Dr. Kai did much of it via phone counseling and on-line consultations, since most spouses and family members lived off-island.

USA TODAYs sports writer, Jill Lieber, wrote an article about Dr. Kais work with surfer Bethany Hamilton, following the 31 October 2003 shark attack off Kauais north shore. Dr. Kai worked with Bethany, her family, the surf teams, and the community to assist them in dealing with the trauma and to help them feel comfortable getting in the water again. Dr. Kai offered these services in the form of faith-based community support.

Dr. Kai frequently works with clergy, and welcomes the collaboration. He has also spoken at churches on topics such as post traumatic stress disorder, addictions, and family development.

Dr. Kai loves helping people, has been recognized nationally for his effectiveness in doing so, and has devoted his life to this purpose.
